Health Concerns With Dandruff
Even though dandruff is only an external problem
usually focused on the scalp, there are many things about this condition
that address our general well being.
First of all, let us tackle the treatments used for fighting flaky
scalps. Anti dandruff shampoos are
widely available on store shelves and most don’t need a prescription.
One should still be careful with his
choice however, and follow instructions carefully.
Shampoos with a zinc derivative are generally okay.
Those with salicylic acid, however, may cause side effects like
irritation and dryness, exacerbating your dandruff condition.
Ketoconazole is also another common ingredient in anti
dandruff products, one made popular by the Nizoral brand.
Like all anti-fungals however, it is not without its problems.
If you are taking other medications, consult your doctor if a shampoo
with this ingredient won’t cause any problems.
Also, be sure to use only the amount suggested at the proper
intervals. Too much ketoconazole
can cause a bunch of side effects including itching, redness, and swelling.
If sensitivity to the product is perceived, consult your doctor as
soon as possible. Pregnant women
should also be wary of this anti-fungal, as it is still being researched
whether or not the chemical will find its way into the fetus and cause
problems. Ketoconazole may also
be present in breast milk.
The treatments mentioned above are for people
interested in a quick fix.
Obviously, these aren’t always good for the body.
If a holistic approach is sought however, not only will your dandruff
go away, but you will experience a healthier body.
Consider your diet, for one thing.
You’d be surprised how much the food you eat affects your scalp.
A diet rich in fatty foods translates to higher acidity up there.
This is said to cause the spread of dandruff friendly fungi.
Now if one were to eat healthier, not only would the scalp be free of
all that nasty itchy flaking, the body would look and feel better too.
Other nutrients that can help against dandruff include fruits and
vegetables, especially those that contain sulfur and vitamin B6.
Nuts and flaxseed are also helpful due to Omega 3, a supplement for
the skin in staving off scruff.
Your digestive system will thank you as well due to the added fiber in your
diet. Foods to avoid include
simple carbohydrates, dairy, and those that cause high acidity.
Your diet isn’t the only thing that needs to change.
You may want to consider using more natural ingredients for the
treatment of your scalp. Most of
the time, the artificial chemicals aren’t all that bad, but they don’t help
outside of their anti dandruff properties.
Now if one were to use something like Rosemary oil, the circulation
of your scalp will improve as well your brain and central nervous system.
One will experience less headaches and be more alert due to less
mental fatigue. It also helps
with joint and respiratory problems.
Combine this with other natural oils like lavender, tea tree and neem
oil and your body will be smoother, healthier and dandruff free.
