Dandruff Prevention

Personal hygiene is an important facet of daily life, and for good reason.  Many germ and fungi based diseases can be avoided just by observing the usual bathing ritual.  This is also true for our hair, which needs regular washing and pampering to avoid problems like dandruff.  Now some may argue that hygiene has nothing to do with the flaking of our scalp.  Be that as it may, there are still some things a person can do to supplement dandruff prevention by observing proper hair care.  So it wouldn’t hurt to follow the tips discussed below.

For those in the know, dandruff is an excessive flaking of dead skin cells usually on the scalp.  Simply shampooing one’s hair regularly will help manage the dryness and keep hair clean free from the flakes.  This alone however is not enough to stop dandruff for long.  If dandruff recurs more often for you, shampoo with ingredients like selenium sulfate and zinc pyrithione will be more effective in managing excessive flaking.  If you’re worried about the smell of anti dandruff shampoos, don’t be.  Modern formulas make sure you’re hair smells rosy and generally dandruff free.  Using a good anti dandruff conditioner three times a week to complement the shampoo will generate better results.  Doing both will keep hair looking good and prevent the accumulation of dead skin cells.

If you’ve heard that climate change affects your scalp, then you’ve heard right.  For people more susceptible to dandruff, it doesn’t even take extreme climates.  Your regular blow drying regimen alone can be a cause for dandruff.  It’s best to keep the dryer at a safe distance to avoid itching and drying of the scalp.  Even bathing or showering with hot water can cause the scalp to flake due to the washing away of natural oils.  Again, this is where a conditioner will help.  That and rinsing with cold water keeps the dandruff away and adds a glossy shine to your locks.

For people afraid that brushing too much might cause hair loss, it might be the other way around.  Brushing daily with a fine tipped brush improves the circulation of your scalp.  This also removes any unwanted loose flakes.  Another thing that improves circulation?  Massaging the scalp with the pads of your finger tips.  Doing this before brushing doubles circulation and also supports healthy follicles, resulting in good hair growth.

When styling your hair, avoid hair sprays and gels that contain alcohol.  The said ingredient can cause dryness of the scalp as well as hair loss.  These days, it is not difficult to accomplish this as there many products available with milder formulas.  Hot oil treatments also help the scalp’s ability to stay moisturized and flake free.  This is also why applying different oils like olive, almond, and coconut oil on your hair helps prevent dandruff.  One good home remedy suggests mixing lemon juice with hot coconut oil.  Leaving the concoction on your scalp overnight is an effective and affordable anti-dandruff technique.
